So before I get into this, I want to preface a few things. First, I am a graphic designer. As a designer, I sometimes get bored and just make stuff. I went to school for Fine Arts and my concentration was in painting and graphic design with a minor in art history. All of this probably explains why I’m out of work. In an economy like this, who has time or money to pay someone creative? So I’ve been kicking this idea around and have finally gotten around to creating it. That said, let me first dive into preface two:
A bit ago I posted some news from our local area about the Washington DC Mayor, Adrian Fenty using DC city resources for his long bike rides. He dabbles in bike racing and therefore needs the training to stay fit (besides the fact that he just stays fit). So the big issue is that as a public servant/figure he is required to have the DC Metro Police escort him no matter where he goes or how long it takes him. As a cyclist, if you’re doing what you’re suppose to, you’re out anywhere from 1-5 hours. What this translates into is 1-5 hours of Police man hours paid out by the city of Washington DC.
I personally don’t have an opinion about this matter. If I was in Mayor Fenty’s position, I don’t know that I’d be much better. The man has to work out, so what more can he do? There are questions about what he does, and how he does it when he goes out on the bike, but almost all cyclists are at fault for not putting a foot on the ground when they reach a stop sign. What must be acknowledged is that the good Mayor is responsible for creating a city that is more bike friendly and bike centric by supporting commuting efforts and more cycling awareness in Washington DC. He is also responsible for supporting the Capital Criterium in 2008, a race in downtown DC, which not only is good for the city, but was in place to raise awareness for being green through the use of bikes. In addition to this, DC is being considered for the Giro d’Italia prologue, one of three prestigious Grand Tour bike races in the world, another good thing for our fair city.
I digress. The hype around this story, perpetuated by the notorious WTOP News, created a lot of feelings and thoughts. I thought I’d poke fun at the feelings and thoughts. I like what Fenty has done for cycling in DC. I’ve benefited from it by commuting to work (when I had a job). The rest of the issues, well, I’ll let you decide.
So I am sure you get it, but the front has the DC flag on it and the back has a DC Metro officer on a motorcycle. I’m selling these bad boys at $22 a pop. At the very least it’s fun. So support District Cycling by Supporting Mayor Fenty, or not supporting him by ordering below:
