So the season is coming up an training is starting to ramp up from maintaining some semblance of form to strength and endurance training. As this happens and I push my body harder and further, my old friend, the “scream breathe” rears his head. That said, I thought I would take the time to define.
The ’scream breathe’ is the thing that you do when you reach a place in pushing your body so physically where the only thing your body can do in an effort to get oxygen to the lungs is push a combination of breathing and screaming. The screaming comes from the pain you are putting your body through. The true reason for this is that you are in so much pain that your body can do little else than react. The ’scream breathe’ is a place where pain takes place of control.
Like a finger print, the ’scream breathe’ is different for everyone. Some growl, instead of scream, while others whimper with each breath. It’s one of the outcomes of pushing your body to the limit that is not attractive or empowering. It’s kind of like looking at a beautiful woman and appreciating her beautiful form only to have it shattered by the act of pooping. She no long is a symbol of grace and beauty, but simply a human being pushing out crap. While cycling is beautiful as is the act of suffering, watching someone ’scream breathe’ isn’t very attractive at all. In fact, it usually twists and contorts the face so much as to render the sufferer unrecognizable as they scream for breath.
The race season has started, the enthusiasts are out in full force and with the shedding of heavy jackets and booties comes the full effort getting form. Enter in the fantastically horrible Scream Breathe. Watch for it as it’s coming to a training ride near you.
