The Moment I’ve Been Waiting For

There is a lot I’m still trying to pull together from the last weekend from the Giro announcement to the Shimano Handmade Bike Show, there are a lot of fantastic things to talk about.  Unfortunately, I’m putting these things aside for the moment as I try my damnedest to pull together the latest episode of the District Cycling Podcast.  Why damnedest? On Saturday night my wife got sick.  I mean, really sick.  Following shortly after that was my almost one year old son.  Following all the amazing things that has happened since Thursday are suddenly overshadowed by up chuck.

As I came into Sunday evening, I began to see the writing on the wall.  My daughter began to throw up EVERYWHERE.  I felt like I was in a horror movie where I was the last one standing.  I would be the hero, or become one of the nameless victims.  The thing that hurts is the amount of work I’ve done to alleviate my wife having to do little more than just be sick.  The upside to this is that I knew if I got sick, I might be able to quickly obtain my race weight or close to it.  Is this twisted?  I would be willing to bet that there are a number of amateur racers out there with the same mindset which is both funny, and twisted.

I’m down by 5 lbs so far. Going from fat to less fat.

In my experience getting sick is never a positive for racing. Sure you might lose a few pounds, but it is mostly water weight that will be gained right back. The negative effect sickness has on training is huge though. Last year I got sick for two weeks in February. It threw such a monkey wrench into my training that I couldn’t find any type of form until June.
